Welcome to

Lefkada

Welcome to Lefkada. Below you will find information about the island, whether that regards celebrations and events, or excursions, activities and entertainment, sight-seeing and beaches!

ABOUT LEFKADA

Lefkada has the good fortune of being situated in one of the most privileged areas of Greece: on the west coast, with its enchanting waters and mild climate. Just at a short distance from Acarnania, it is considered to be both an island and a mainland peninsula thanks to its pontoon bridge.

Its history goes way back into the centuries and excavations show that the island was inhabited since ancient times. Throughout the long years of war, it shared the same fate as that of the rest of the Ionian Islands which succeeded in uniting with Greece in 1864.

Because of its natural beauty, its people, its qualitative tourism development and the easy access provided by the bridge, which was built in stone for the first time during the Roman Rule, Lefkada today is one of the most popular destinations in our country.

WHERE TO GO

Exquisite and famous beaches with crystal waters, such as Porto Katsiki and the Engremni; mountainous villages covered in green, such as the Lazarata, Karya and more. Ravines, such as the Ravine of Melisa, springs, waterfalls, such as those at Dimosari and wonderful strolls in nature.  Churches and monasteries with impressive architecture and significant icon paintings; noteworthy, but also innovative museums such as the Museum of Archaeology and the Museum of Lefkadian Embroidery and libraries with significant documents and rare manuscripts. One thing is certain: you will never get bored at Lefkada!

CULTURE

Festivals, events, celebrations: the people of Lefkada, who are not only people of the arts, but also enjoy having fun, never cease to organize events (concerts, theatrical plays, poetic nights, exhibitions, dance nights). Furthermore, they preserve the customs and traditions of their ancestors and are happy to invite the locals and visitors to such events.
Don’t miss the opportunity of attending a traditional wedding at Karya, or at visiting the lentil festival at Agios Donatos, or one of the hundreds of celebrations that take place in the villages, to participate in their Christmas and Easter customs and, of course, to be at the Folklore Festival and at the Speech and Arts Festivals.

TOURISM – ENTERTAINMENT

There is a wide selection of menus at the restaurants, taverns and at the ouzo taverns by the sea or in the mountains. In the town of Lefkada, but also at the cosmopolitan Nydri, Lygia, Vasiliki, Agios Nikitas, Kathisma, Karya etc. you will have the opportunity to find several bars, cafeterias and night clubs which will entertain you at night or during the day.

You can rent cars, bikes, yachts or sport equipment at the island’s main locations! Last, you will be able to enjoy a cruise or a tour around the surrounding islets, Meganissi, Ithaca and Cephalonia, as well as around the island’s enchanting beaches.
